Ventilation is a basic requirement to keep the indoors of any establishment fresh and healthy whether it is a residential building or an office or a commercial entity. Traditionally, there are a number of ways you can try to ventilate your place, like opening a window, using a local exhaust fan or a number of exhaust fans, or using ventilation systems that clear out the exhaust air as well as bring in the new fresh air.
However, if the weather goes to any extremes, a little too cold, or a little too hot, then the costs start to increase which is when you need something different, a system of ventilation that is more efficient than other methods and saves you a lot of money and resources in the longer run.
The perfect example of such a phenomenon would be a heat recovery ventilation system. We’ll talk about it a little later in the article but first let’s look at why you need ventilation in general and especially, ventilation that is efficient.
The Need for Ventilation
In an indoor atmosphere without a requisite flow of incoming and outgoing air can be quite bad as most of us would already know. Humidity, smell and gases from cooking, fire, washing, breathing, new furniture or even different appliances and devices needs to be forced out of an indoor environment. When that doesn’t happen, the condensation of above-mentioned elements can cause the air to go stale and excessively humid which is bad for anyone’s health.
Furthermore, we would like to point out that moisture condensation gives way to mould, bacteria, fungi and algae in the damp places which are even more reprehensible in living conditions. This makes it absolutely clear that utilising proper ventilation methods, according to the weather in your particular area, throughout the year, is a must.
Now normally, if you have an air conditioner on during the summer and a heater on during the winter, you would not need more elaborate setups to keep the ventilation at your place up to an acceptable level. However, it is not financially viable for you to do that all year, and that is true for most people, which is where devices such as exhaust fans and other ventilation systems come into the picture.
However, exhaust fans, although they remove moisture, also increase the negative pressure inside the house which forces the air to come in through the doors and windows which increases dust and odour. Ventilation systems, on the other hand, cost a lot and aren’t efficient in energy consumption.
Heat Recovery Ventilation
This type of ventilation system not only clears the stale, humid and borderline poisonous air out of your place but separately, it is also bringing in fresh new air which keeps the pressure inside the house balanced. Additionally, it uses the heat of the outgoing stale air to heat up the incoming cool air. This phenomenon is known as heat recovery ventilation and it dramatically reduces your need to use heaters and thus decrease expenses.
The air streams of outgoing and incoming air, are intertwined in the exchange core in a way that although the air is not mixed, the heat is transferred, resulting in a remarkably efficient system. In hot weather, the system will transfer heat from the incoming fresh air to the stale air conditioner air going out. Whereas in the winter, it will transfer heat to the incoming air after taking it from the outgoing air. Depending on how many people you have at your home or in your office building at a given time, the fan speed and the air flow speed can be set accordingly.
